As "module" is more generic concept than "class", the name misleadingly implies that either this method doesn't returns refined _modules_, or modules can't be refined. This is obviously not true and trivially disproved: ```ruby module Refs refine Enumerable do def foo = puts 'foo' end end Refs.refinements[0].refined_class #=> Enumerable. Which is, well, not a class. # The refinement is usable, so it is not a mute concept: using Refs [1, 2, 3].foo # prints "foo" successfully ``` I believe we refer to "modules" when some feature applies to modules and classes. Unless there is some deeper consideration for the current naming (I don't see justification in #12737, but I might miss something), the method should be renamed or aliased. PS: Sorry for a huge amount of "nitpicky" issues after the version release. Typically, those concerns emerge while I am working on the [changelog](https://rubyreferences.github.io/rubychanges/), and I am usually trying to start the work at least a month before the release. Unfortunately, due to you-know-what, I was unable to do it in time this year. After the 3.2 changelog, I plan to switch to the "master changelog" approach (following the development with the "current unreleased changes" document) this year. Time.now.zone # => "Mitteleuro\xE3ische Zeit" Time.now.zone.encoding # => #<Encoding:IBM437> puts Time.now.zone # => "Mitteleurop∑ische Zeit" (should be "Mitteleuropäische Zeit") Time.now.zone.encode(Encoding::UTF_8) # => "Mitteleurop∑ische Zeit" Doing a force_encoding on all encodings in Encoding.list reveals that ISO-8859-(1..16) and Windows-125(0,2,4,7) work to coerce the ä out of the time zone string: Time.now.zone.force_encoding(Encoding::WINDOWS_1252) # => "Mitteleuro\xE3ische Zeit" ... but ... The only methods in `common` not updated were [`URI.extract` and `URI.regexp`][2] which are marked as obsolete. (The old parser was kept in the `DEFAULT_PARSER` constant despite it not being the default for those methods, presumably for backward compatibility.) However, similar [methods called on `URI::Generic`][3] were never updated to use this new parser. Arguably this doesn't cause problems because at least in the case above, the URI can be built with the polymorphic constructor, but having the option to build URIs from explicit named parts is useful, and leaving the outdated functionality in the `Generic` class is ambiguous. It's possible that the whole Generic class and its subclasses aren't intended to be used directly how I'm intending here, but there's nothing I could see that suggested this is the case. I'm not aware of the entire list of differences between RFC2396 and RFC3986. The relevant difference here is that in RFC2396 an individual segment of a host ([`domainlabel`s][4]) could only be `alphanum | alphanum *( alphanum | "-" ) alphanum`, whereas RFC3986 allows [hostnames][5] to include any of `ALPHA / DIGIT / "-" / "." / "_" / "~"`. It's possible that other differences might cause issues for developers, but since this has gone over 8 years without anyone else caring about this, this is definitely not especially urgent. Various protocol parsers such as Redis `RESP3` or `msgpack`, have to create hashes, and they know the size in advance. For efficiency, it would be preferable if they could directly allocate a Hash of the necessary size, so that large hashes wouldn't cause many re-alloccations and re-hash. `String` and `Array` both already offer similar APIs: ```ruby String.new(capacity: XXX) Array.new(XX) / rb_ary_new_capa(long) ``` However there's no such public API for Hashes in Ruby land. ### Proposal I think `Hash` should have a way to create a new hash with a `capacity` parameter. In the ViewComponent framework I help maintain, we added a method to declare a template as such: ```ruby class Component erb_template <<~ERB <h1>Hello, <%= @name %>!</h1> ERB end ``` I'd prefer to be able to write: ```ruby class Component template <<~ERB <h1>Hello, <%= @name %>!</h1> ERB end ``` And be able to see that the argument passed to `.template` was from a HEREDOC with an `ERB` identifier, which would allow me to use the correct template handler to compile the template. I could see this being implemented: 1) As a new property of String, such as `identifier` or `heredoc_identifier`. 2) By having HEREDOCs return a subclass of String that includes an `identifier` property.
