[ruby-core:124714] [Ruby Bug#21870] Regexp: Warnings when using multiple non-overlapping \p{...} classes
by jneen (Jeanine Adkisson) 11 Oct '26

11 Oct '26

Issue #21870 has been reported by jneen (Jeanine Adkisson). ---------------------------------------- Bug #21870: Regexp: Warnings when using multiple non-overlapping \p{...} classes https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/21870 * Author: jneen (Jeanine Adkisson) * Status: Open * ruby -v: 4.0.0, 4.0.1, earlier versions to a lesser extent * Backport: 3.2: UNKNOWN, 3.3: UNKNOWN, 3.4: UNKNOWN, 4.0: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- ```ruby $VERBOSE = true # warning: character class has duplicated range: /[\p{Word}\p{S}]/ regex = /[\p{Word}\p{S}]/ ``` As far as I can tell this is a perfectly valid and non-overlapping set of unicode properties, but I am still being spammed with warnings. Using `/(\p{Word}|\p{S})/` is kind of a workaround, but it is slower. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:126381] [Ruby Feature#22244] `ruby -UU` should set both internal and external, `ruby -E` should print encoding list
by zenspider (Ryan Davis) 11 Oct '26

11 Oct '26

Issue #22244 has been reported by zenspider (Ryan Davis). ---------------------------------------- Feature #22244: `ruby -UU` should set both internal and external, `ruby -E` should print encoding list https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/22244 * Author: zenspider (Ryan Davis) * Status: Open ---------------------------------------- ``` 10004 $ env -u LANG ruby -U -e 'pp [Encoding.default_internal, Encoding.default_external]' [#<Encoding:UTF-8>, #<Encoding:US-ASCII>] 10005 $ env -u LANG ruby -EUTF-8 -e 'pp [...]' [nil, #<Encoding:UTF-8>] 10006 $ env -u LANG ruby -EUTF-8 -U -e 'pp [...]' [#<Encoding:UTF-8>, #<Encoding:UTF-8>] 10007 $ env -u LANG ruby -EUTF-8:UTF-8 -e 'pp [...]' [#<Encoding:UTF-8>, #<Encoding:UTF-8>] 10008 $ env -u LANG ruby -UU -e 'pp [...]' [#<Encoding:UTF-8>, #<Encoding:US-ASCII>] ``` I think the option processing of encodings is VERY poorly documented and frustrating to try to use. 1. --help doesn't list -U. (The man page does) 2. --help for -E doesn't provide a means to get a list of available encoding names (same with manpage), leading me to try U, UTF8, UTF_8, before finding UTF-8. `ruby -E` could just print them all out. 3. WHY NOT take UTF8 or UTF_8 (since that's the class name)? 4. Please consider `-UU` to mean `-EUTF-8:UTF-8` -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:126119] [Ruby Bug#22204] Kernel#require documentation pulls from RubyGems' version of method instead of core version (stable releases only)
by maxfelsher (Max Felsher) 09 Oct '26

09 Oct '26

Issue #22204 has been reported by maxfelsher (Max Felsher). ---------------------------------------- Bug #22204: Kernel#require documentation pulls from RubyGems' version of method instead of core version (stable releases only) https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/22204 * Author: maxfelsher (Max Felsher) * Status: Open * Backport: 3.3: UNKNOWN, 3.4: UNKNOWN, 4.0: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- Currently, https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/4.0/Kernel.html#method-i-require shows the following text: > When RubyGems is required, [`Kernel#require`](https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/4.0/Kernel.html#method-i-require) is replaced with our own which is capable of loading gems on demand. > > When you call `require 'x'`, this is what happens: > > * If the file can be loaded from the existing Ruby loadpath, it is. > * Otherwise, installed gems are searched for a file that matches. If it’s found in gem ‘y’, that gem is activated (added to the loadpath). > > The normal `require` functionality of returning false if that file has already been loaded is preserved. Clicking the "Source" button shows RubyGems' version of the method, with a comment indicating it was pulled from `# File lib/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb, line 36`. The same situation holds for https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/3.4/Kernel.html#method-i-require (as well as the 3.3 and 3.2 documentation, for what it's worth). This seems to have been fixed on master: at this moment, https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/master/Kernel.html#method-i-require shows documentation that makes more sense for a core method (starting with "Loads the given `name`, returning `true` if successful and `false` if the feature is already loaded"). I think the fix was in https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/16086, which referenced a GitHub issue describing the same problem described here. If the backport policy allows for this kind of fix to be backported, would it be possible to fix the documentation for Ruby 4.0 and 3.4 in addition to master? (I assume this is out of scope for 3.3 and 3.2.) -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:125919] [Ruby Bug#22174] Set operations (&, ^, collect!, flatten, classify, divide) do not preserve compare_by_identity
by gil.desmarais (Gil Desmarais) 09 Oct '26

09 Oct '26

Issue #22174 has been reported by gil.desmarais (Gil Desmarais). ---------------------------------------- Bug #22174: Set operations (&, ^, collect!, flatten, classify, divide) do not preserve compare_by_identity https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/22174 * Author: gil.desmarais (Gil Desmarais) * Status: Open * ruby -v: ruby 4.0.5 (2026-05-20 revision 64336ffd0e) +PRISM [arm64-darwin25] * Backport: 3.3: UNKNOWN, 3.4: UNKNOWN, 4.0: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- Since `Set` was transitioned to a C-level core class in Ruby 4.0, several operations that allocate new sets or partition subsets (`&`, `^`, `collect!`, `flatten`, `classify`, and `divide`) lost the `compare_by_identity` behavior for the receiver set or its subsets. * For `&`, `collect!`, `flatten`, `classify`, and `divide`, the resulting sets/subsets are allocated without propagating the `compare_by_identity` flag (returning `false` for `#compare_by_identity?`). * For `^` (XOR) with a generic `Enumerable`, the returned set has the flag set (via `dup`), but it allocates a temporary set `tmp` to hold the RHS elements without propagating the `compare_by_identity` flag. This causes the RHS elements to be deduplicated incorrectly using value equality instead of identity equality. A pull request has been opened with the fix and tests: https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/17633 ### Reproduction ```ruby require 'set' # 1. Intersection & s1 = Set.new.compare_by_identity s2 = Set.new s1 << "a" s2 << "a" puts "Intersection preserves compare_by_identity: #{(s1 & s2).compare_by_identity?}" # Expected: true # Actual: false # 2. XOR ^ (with duplicate objects by value on RHS) s_xor = Set.new.compare_by_identity x1 = +"x" x2 = +"x" result = s_xor ^ [x1, x2] puts "XOR with Enumerable preserves identity comparison: #{result.size == 2}" # Expected: true (size should be 2, because x1 and x2 are distinct objects) # Actual: false (size is 1) # 3. collect! / map! s_collect = Set.new(["a", "b"]).compare_by_identity s_collect.collect! { |x| x } puts "collect! preserves compare_by_identity: #{s_collect.compare_by_identity?}" # Expected: true # Actual: false # 4. flatten s_flat = Set.new([Set.new([1])]).compare_by_identity puts "flatten preserves compare_by_identity: #{s_flat.flatten.compare_by_identity?}" # Expected: true # Actual: false # 5. classify s_classify = Set.new(["a", "b"]).compare_by_identity classified = s_classify.classify { |x| x } puts "classify subsets preserve compare_by_identity: #{classified.values.all?(&:compare_by_identity?)}" # Expected: true # Actual: false # 6. divide s_divide = Set.new(["a", "b"]).compare_by_identity divided = s_divide.divide { |x| x } puts "divide subsets preserve compare_by_identity: #{divided.all?(&:compare_by_identity?)}" # Expected: true # Actual: false -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:126531] [Ruby Feature#22274] Make `IO::Buffer` no longer experimental.
by ioquatix (Samuel Williams) 09 Oct '26

09 Oct '26

Issue #22274 has been reported by ioquatix (Samuel Williams). ---------------------------------------- Feature #22274: Make `IO::Buffer` no longer experimental. https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/22274 * Author: ioquatix (Samuel Williams) * Status: Open * Assignee: ioquatix (Samuel Williams) ---------------------------------------- `IO::Buffer` was introduced in Ruby 3.1 by Feature #18020 as an experimental API. It provides an efficient buffer abstraction for fiber scheduler I/O, zero-copy operations, binary protocol implementations, and access from native extensions. Since then, the API has seen several Ruby releases of real-world use and substantial development. Ruby 4.1 now has cohesive semantics for buffer ownership and lifecycle, slicing, locking, string and file mappings, MemoryView integration, and single-transfer I/O operations. I propose making both the Ruby and public C interfaces of `IO::Buffer` non-experimental in Ruby 4.1. This would involve: * Removing the allocation-time experimental warning. * Removing the experimental status from the class documentation. * Removing `RB_IO_BUFFER_EXPERIMENTAL` from the public C header. * Removing warning suppression that is only required because `IO::Buffer` is experimental. * Updating NEWS to describe `IO::Buffer` as stable. `RUBY_IO_BUFFER_VERSION` would remain available for compile-time feature detection as the interface continues to evolve. Before stabilizing the interface, I would particularly appreciate feedback from JRuby and TruffleRuby maintainers. [ruby-core:126364] [Ruby Bug#22240] Protect against SEGV caused by native extensions using rb_funcall between rb_protect and rb_jump_tag
by rwstauner (Randy Stauner) 09 Oct '26

09 Oct '26

Issue #22240 has been reported by rwstauner (Randy Stauner). ---------------------------------------- Bug #22240: Protect against SEGV caused by native extensions using rb_funcall between rb_protect and rb_jump_tag https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/22240 * Author: rwstauner (Randy Stauner) * Status: Open * Backport: 3.3: REQUIRED, 3.4: REQUIRED, 4.0: REQUIRED ---------------------------------------- It's possible for native extensions do something like int state = 0; rb_protect(some_func, Qnil, &state); if (state) { rb_funcall(self, rb_intern("handler"), 0); rb_jump_tag(state); } If the ruby code in the rb_funcall has a rescue clause it will clear errinfo. When rb_jump_tag flows to hook_before_rewind with errinfo as Qnil it currently will SEGV. If I add a check to avoid the SEGV, the process then exits silently. If a native extension puts us in this state, the original message is gone. One thing we can do is detect this scenario and fabricate an exception. I have a PR up with a possible solution for this but am looking for feedback on the exception type and message or alternative suggestions for handling. I have reproduced this crash as far back as Ruby 3.3. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:120579] [Ruby master Feature#21020] Sync sig directory for prism of default gem.
by ksss (Yuki Kurihara) 08 Oct '26

08 Oct '26

Issue #21020 has been reported by ksss (Yuki Kurihara). ---------------------------------------- Feature #21020: Sync sig directory for prism of default gem. https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/21020 * Author: ksss (Yuki Kurihara) * Status: Open ---------------------------------------- Currently, the type signatures (RBS) for the default gem is not available. **Prism** is the only default gem with type signatures, but this number is expected to increase in the future. As a first step to resolving this issue, I propose including the `sig` directory of Prism as a default gem in the synchronization process. [ruby-core:119757] [Ruby master Bug#20872] Undefined RUBY_API_VERSION_* macros used in <ruby/backward/cxxanyargs.hpp>
by hanazuki (Kasumi Hanazuki) 08 Oct '26

Issue #20872 has been reported by hanazuki (Kasumi Hanazuki). ---------------------------------------- Bug #20872: Undefined RUBY_API_VERSION_* macros used in <ruby/backward/cxxanyargs.hpp> https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/20872 * Author: hanazuki (Kasumi Hanazuki) * Status: Open * ruby -v: ruby 3.4.0preview2 (2024-10-07 master 32c733f57b) +PRISM [x86_64-linux] * Backport: 3.1: UNKNOWN, 3.2: UNKNOWN, 3.3: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- I just noticed that C++ compilers warn for undefined RUBY_API_VERSION_MAJOR/RUBY_API_VERSION_MINOR macros in `<ruby/backward/cxxanyargs.hpp>` when preprocessing `<ruby.h>`. ``` % cat test.cpp #include <ruby.h> % clang++ -Wundef -I ~/.rbenv/versions/3.4.0-preview2/include/ruby-3.4.0+0 -I ~/.rbenv/versions/3.4.0-preview2/include/ruby-3.4.0+0/x86_64-linux -c test.cpp -o /dev/null In file included from test.cpp:1: In file included from /home/kasumi/.rbenv/versions/3.4.0-preview2/include/ruby-3.4.0+0/ruby.h:38: In file included from /home/kasumi/.rbenv/versions/3.4.0-preview2/include/ruby-3.4.0+0/ruby/ruby.h:27: In file included from /home/kasumi/.rbenv/versions/3.4.0-preview2/include/ruby-3.4.0+0/ruby/internal/anyargs.h:83: /home/kasumi/.rbenv/versions/3.4.0-preview2/include/ruby-3.4.0+0/ruby/backward/cxxanyargs.hpp:540:6: warning: 'RUBY_API_VERSION_MAJOR' is not defined, evaluates to 0 [-Wundef] #if (RUBY_API_VERSION_MAJOR * 100 + RUBY_API_VERSION_MINOR) >= 301 ^ /home/kasumi/.rbenv/versions/3.4.0-preview2/include/ruby-3.4.0+0/ruby/backward/cxxanyargs.hpp:540:37: warning: 'RUBY_API_VERSION_MINOR' is not defined, evaluates to 0 [-Wundef] #if (RUBY_API_VERSION_MAJOR * 100 + RUBY_API_VERSION_MINOR) >= 301 ^ 2 warnings generated. ``` The offending code was introduced in commit:01825e8bffd. The accompanying code comment says a deprecation warning should be emitted for some use-cases (passing ANYARGS function pointers to `rb_define_method`-series functions) with Ruby 3.x, which looks not working as intended for the current Ruby versions. This seems effectively doing no harm but just disturbing for extension developers. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:125877] [Ruby Feature#22134] Faster rb_scan_args() for keyword args (optimization)
by luke-gru (Luke Gruber) 07 Oct '26

07 Oct '26

Issue #22134 has been reported by luke-gru (Luke Gruber). ---------------------------------------- Feature #22134: Faster rb_scan_args() for keyword args (optimization) https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/22134 * Author: luke-gru (Luke Gruber) * Status: Open ---------------------------------------- ## Motivation When using the `rb_scan_args()` API, often we want to find a value for a given keyword argument. In order to do this, we call `rb_scan_args()` like so: ```c VALUE str; VALUE kwargs; VALUE example; rb_scan_args(argc, argv, "1:", &str, &kwargs); // duplicates the kwargs hash in argv if (!NIL_P(kwargs)) rb_get_kwargs(kwargs, &id_example, 0, 1, &example); // mutates the duplicated kwargs hash to retrieve `example:` ``` This duplicates the keyword args hash given in `argv`. It would be nice to be able to grab a direct reference to the keyword hash and to have a variant of `rb_get_kwargs()` that didn't mutate the passed in hash. ## Proposal Add a new valid format character for `rb_scan_args()`: ```c VALUE str; VALUE kwargs; VALUE example; rb_scan_args(argc, argv, "1:^", &str, &kwargs); // access kwargs directly from argv if (!NIL_P(kwargs)) rb_get_kwargs_const(kwargs, &id_example, 0, 1, &example); // don't mutate the passed kwargs hash ``` This '^' character would only be valid after a ":'. I have a [pull request](https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/17558) available for anyone that is interested. Thank you! -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:111146] [Ruby master Bug#19172] `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` is innacurate sometimes -- document or change?
by ivoanjo (Ivo Anjo) 07 Oct '26

07 Oct '26

Issue #19172 has been reported by ivoanjo (Ivo Anjo). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19172: `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` is innacurate sometimes -- document or change? https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19172 * Author: ivoanjo (Ivo Anjo) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * ruby -v: (All Ruby versions) * Backport: 2.7: UNKNOWN, 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- Howdy 👋! I work for Datadog [on the ddtrace gem](https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb) and I found a... sharp edge on the internal `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` API. I am aware that `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` is documented an experimental API that is exported as a symbol but not present on the VM include files. ### Background In the ddtrace profiling component, we setup a signal handler and then periodically send SIGPROF signals to try to interrupt the running Ruby thread (e.g. the thread that is holding the global VM lock or equivalent). In the signal handler, we need to perform some API calls which are not safe to do without the GVL. So we need to check if the signal handler got called in the thread that has the GVL. ### The issue ```ruby int ruby_thread_has_gvl_p(void) { rb_thread_t *th = ruby_thread_from_native(); if (th && th->blocking_region_buffer == 0) { return 1; } else { return 0; } } ``` In its current implementation, `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` only checks if the thread has a `blocking_region_buffer` or not. Unfortunately, this means that when called from a thread that lost the GVL but not due to blocking (e.g. via `rb_thread_schedule()`), it can still claim that a thread is holding the GVL when that is not the case. I ran into this issue in https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb/pull/2415, and needed to find a workaround. ### Next steps Since this is an internal VM API, I'm not sure you'd want to change the current behavior, so I was thinking of perhaps two options: * Is it worth changing `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` to be accurate in the case I've listed? * If not, would you accept a PR to document its current limitations, so that others don't run into the same issue I did? -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/
