[ruby-core:111146] [Ruby master Bug#19172] `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` is innacurate sometimes -- document or change?

Issue #19172 has been reported by ivoanjo (Ivo Anjo). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19172: `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` is innacurate sometimes -- document or change? https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19172 * Author: ivoanjo (Ivo Anjo) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * ruby -v: (All Ruby versions) * Backport: 2.7: UNKNOWN, 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- Howdy 👋! I work for Datadog [on the ddtrace gem](https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb) and I found a... sharp edge on the internal `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` API. I am aware that `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` is documented an experimental API that is exported as a symbol but not present on the VM include files. ### Background In the ddtrace profiling component, we setup a signal handler and then periodically send SIGPROF signals to try to interrupt the running Ruby thread (e.g. the thread that is holding the global VM lock or equivalent). In the signal handler, we need to perform some API calls which are not safe to do without the GVL. So we need to check if the signal handler got called in the thread that has the GVL. ### The issue ```ruby int ruby_thread_has_gvl_p(void) { rb_thread_t *th = ruby_thread_from_native(); if (th && th->blocking_region_buffer == 0) { return 1; } else { return 0; } } ``` In its current implementation, `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` only checks if the thread has a `blocking_region_buffer` or not. Unfortunately, this means that when called from a thread that lost the GVL but not due to blocking (e.g. via `rb_thread_schedule()`), it can still claim that a thread is holding the GVL when that is not the case. I ran into this issue in https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb/pull/2415, and needed to find a workaround. ### Next steps Since this is an internal VM API, I'm not sure you'd want to change the current behavior, so I was thinking of perhaps two options: * Is it worth changing `ruby_thread_has_gvl_p` to be accurate in the case I've listed? * If not, would you accept a PR to document its current limitations, so that others don't run into the same issue I did? -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:114332] [Ruby master Bug#19794] Ruby 3.2.2 fails to build on macOS Sonoma betas
by jhaungs (Jim Haungs) 02 Oct '26

02 Oct '26

Issue #19794 has been reported by jhaungs (Jim Haungs). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19794: Ruby 3.2.2 fails to build on macOS Sonoma betas https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19794 * Author: jhaungs (Jim Haungs) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * ruby -v: 3.2.2 * Backport: 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN, 3.2: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- With Big Sur, Apple deprecated putting dylibs in /usr/local/lib. In Sonoma (beta 4), this directory has disappeared completely. However, ruby's configure script depends on its existence. So, virtually every ruby installer (RVM, rbenv, asdf, ruby-build, and even building from source tarball) fails. When building ruby 3.2.2 from source, the configure step outputs the irritatingly useless "something wrong with LDFLAGS" error message and fails to build. The solution was to `cd /usr/local; sudo mkdir lib` to create the missing lib directory under /usr/local. It would be nice to remove this dependency from the configure script. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:111740] [Ruby master Bug#19325] Windows support lacking.
by dsisnero (Dominic Sisneros) 29 Sep '26

29 Sep '26

Issue #19325 has been reported by dsisnero (Dominic Sisneros). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19325: Windows support lacking. https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19325 * Author: dsisnero (Dominic Sisneros) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * Backport: 2.7: UNKNOWN, 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN, 3.2: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- Ruby's support on windows has always been second class. With some of the recent decisions, windows support is falling even more behind. Recent developments in mjit and yjit that exclude windows are two glaring issues that should be corrected. Googling 'percent of windows vs other operating systems' and it shows windows has a share of 76%. Ceding that users to python and other programming languages has to be one of the reasons python continues get more market share from ruby. With rust having first class windows support and threading support, is there a reason why yjit is not able to work on windows? Also, windows compiler support has matured enough and vcpkg support has evolved enough that it seems it should be possible to finally get a ruby version without having to use msys2. Even Crystal language has a version that runs on windows without needing msys2. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:111789] [Ruby master Feature#19333] Setting (Fiber Local|Thread Local|Fiber Storage) to nil should delete value in order to avoid memory leaks.
by ioquatix (Samuel Williams) 14 Sep '26

14 Sep '26

Issue #19333 has been reported by ioquatix (Samuel Williams). ---------------------------------------- Feature #19333: Setting (Fiber Local|Thread Local|Fiber Storage) to nil should delete value in order to avoid memory leaks. https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19333 * Author: ioquatix (Samuel Williams) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal ---------------------------------------- As it stands, Fiber Locals, Thread Locals and Fiber Storage have no way of deleting key-value associations. ```ruby 100.times do |i| name = :"variable-#{i}" Thread.current[name] = 10 end ``` Because of this, dynamically generated associations can leak over time. This is worse for things like Threads that might be pooled (or maybe an argument against user-space pooling). In any case, having a way to delete those associations would allow application code to at least delete the associations when they no longer make sense. I propose that assigning `nil` to "locals" or "storage" should effectively delete them. e.g. ```ruby 100.times do |i| name = :"variable-#{i}" Thread.current[name] = 10 Thread.current[name] = nil # delete association end ``` A more invasive alternative would be to define new interfaces like `Thread::Local`, `Fiber::Local` and `Fiber::Storage::Local` (or something) which correctly clean up on GC. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

This is true in Tracepoint#enable and Tracepoint#disable methods. I have a patch coming. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:114645] [Ruby master Bug#19865] Segfault when calling user signal handlers during VM shutdown
by ivoanjo (Ivo Anjo) 27 Aug '26

27 Aug '26

Issue #19865 has been reported by ivoanjo (Ivo Anjo). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19865: Segfault when calling user signal handlers during VM shutdown https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19865 * Author: ivoanjo (Ivo Anjo) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * ruby -v: ruby 3.2.2 (2023-03-30 revision e51014f9c0) [x86_64-linux] * Backport: 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN, 3.2: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- Howdy 👋! I work for Datadog [on the `ddtrace` gem](https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb) . I've found this issue while investigating a [customer crash report](https://github.com/DataDog/dd-trace-rb/issues/2980). ### Background The original issue was found in a production app. A number of things need to be in play to cause it. The [`ruby-odbc`](https://rubygems.org/gems/ruby-odbc) gem provides a way of accessing databases through the ODBC API. It wraps a database connection as a Data object, with a free function that, prior to freeing the native resources, disconnects from the database if the connection was still active. Because disconnecting from the database is a blocking operation, the gem (reasonably, in my opinion), releases the global VM lock before disconnecting. The trigger for the crash is: 1. The app in question used puma, and puma installs a `Signal.trap('TERM')` 2. The database object was still connected when the app started to shut down 3. A VM shutdown starts... 4. Half-way through shutdown, the VM received a SIGTERM signal, and queued it for processing 5. The VM calls the free function on all objects 6. The ruby-odbc gem sees there's an active database connection, and tries to release the GVL to call the blocking disconnect 7. Before releasing the GVL, the VM checks for pending interruptions 8. The VM tries to run the Ruby-level signal handler method half-way through VM shutdown, when you can no longer run Ruby code 9. Segfault ### How to reproduce (Ruby version & script) I was able to reproduce on a minimal example on Ruby 3.2.2 (`ruby 3.2.2 (2023-03-30 revision e51014f9c0) [x86_64-linux]`) and recent master (`ruby 3.3.0dev (2023-08-17T07:30:01Z master d26b015e83) [x86_64-linux]`). I've put the test-case up on github as well <https://github.com/DataDog/signal-bug-testcase>, but here's the important bits: `signal-bug-testcase.rb`: ```ruby require 'signal_bug_testcase' Signal.trap("TERM") { puts "Hello, world" } FOO = SignalBugTestcase.new ``` `signal_bug_testcase.c`: ```ruby #include <ruby.h> #include <ruby/thread.h> #include <signal.h> #include <unistd.h> typedef struct { int dummy; } BugTestcase; void *test_nogvl(void *unused) { fprintf(stderr, "GVL released!\n"); return NULL; } static void bug_testcase_free(void* ptr) { fprintf(stderr, "Free getting called! Sending signal...\n"); kill(getpid(), SIGTERM); fprintf(stderr, "SIGTERM signal queued, trying to release GVL...\n"); rb_thread_call_without_gvl(test_nogvl, NULL, NULL, NULL); fprintf(stderr, "After releasing GVL!\n"); free(ptr); } const rb_data_type_t bug_testcase_data_type = { .wrap_struct_name = "SignalBugTestcase", .function = { NULL, bug_testcase_free, NULL }, .flags = RUBY_TYPED_FREE_IMMEDIATELY }; VALUE bug_testcase_alloc(VALUE klass) { BugTestcase* obj = calloc(1, sizeof(BugTestcase)); return TypedData_Make_Struct(klass, BugTestcase, &bug_testcase_data_type, obj); } void Init_signal_bug_testcase(void) { VALUE cBugTestcase = rb_define_class("SignalBugTestcase", rb_cObject); rb_define_alloc_func(cBugTestcase, bug_testcase_alloc); } ``` ### Expectation and result No segfault happens. Interestingly, on Ruby 2.7, the VM exits half-way through but doesn't always segfault, but running it a few times always triggers the issue. On 3.2+ it crashes every time for me. I suspect the right thing here is to no longer accept/try to run any Ruby-level signal handlers after VM shutdown starts. Here's what I see with this test-case: ``` $ bundle exec ruby lib/signal-bug-testcase.rb Free getting called! Sending signal... SIGTERM signal queued, trying to release GVL... lib/signal-bug-testcase.rb:3: [BUG] Segmentation fault at 0x0000000000000007 ruby 3.2.2 (2023-03-30 revision e51014f9c0) [x86_64-linux] -- Control frame [ruby-core:115143] [Ruby master Bug#19970] Eval leaks callcache and callinfo objects on arm32 (linux)

Issue #19970 has been reported by larsin (Lars Ingjer). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19970: Eval leaks callcache and callinfo objects on arm32 (linux) https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19970 * Author: larsin (Lars Ingjer) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * ruby -v: ruby 3.2.2 (2023-03-30 revision e51014f9c0) [armv7l-linux-eabihf] * Backport: 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN, 3.2: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- The following script demonstrates a memory leak on arm 32 (linux): ``` ruby def gcdiff(n) GC.start if @last_gc_stat puts "GC.stat #{n} diff old_objects: #{GC.stat(:old_objects) - @last_gc_stat}" end @last_gc_stat = GC.stat(:old_objects) end def foo end 10.times do |i| 10_000.times do eval 'foo' end gcdiff(i) puts "Number of live objects: #{GC.stat(:heap_live_slots)}" puts "Memory usage: #{`ps -o rss= -p #{$$}`}" puts end ``` Output: ``` Number of live objects: 41303 Memory usage: 11900 GC.stat 1 diff old_objects: 20037 Number of live objects: 61317 Memory usage: 13604 GC.stat 2 diff old_objects: 20001 Number of live objects: 81317 Memory usage: 14880 GC.stat 3 diff old_objects: 20000 Number of live objects: 101317 Memory usage: 16596 GC.stat 4 diff old_objects: 20000 Number of live objects: 121317 Memory usage: 17248 GC.stat 5 diff old_objects: 20000 Number of live objects: 141317 Memory usage: 18760 GC.stat 6 diff old_objects: 20000 Number of live objects: 161317 Memory usage: 19540 GC.stat 7 diff old_objects: 20000 Number of live objects: 181317 Memory usage: 21752 GC.stat 8 diff old_objects: 20000 Number of live objects: 201317 Memory usage: 21828 GC.stat 9 diff old_objects: 20000 Number of live objects: 221317 Memory usage: 24896 ``` ObjectSpace.count_imemo_objects shows that imemo_callcache and imemo_callinfo are leaking. The issue does not occur on arm64 mac or x86_64 linux with the same ruby version. The issue has also been reproduced with the latest 3.2.2 snapshot (2023-09-30). -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:111678] [Ruby master Feature#19315] Lazy substrings in CRuby
by Eregon (Benoit Daloze) 21 Aug '26

21 Aug '26

Issue #19315 has been reported by Eregon (Benoit Daloze). ---------------------------------------- Feature #19315: Lazy substrings in CRuby https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19315 * Author: Eregon (Benoit Daloze) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal ---------------------------------------- CRuby should implement lazy substrings, i.e., "abcdef"[1..3] must not copy bytes. Currently CRuby only reuse the char* if the substring is until the end of the buffer. But it should also work wherever the substring starts and ends. Yes, it means RSTRING_PTR() might need to allocate to \0-terminate, so be it, it's worth it. There is already code for this (`SHARABLE_MIDDLE_SUBSTRING`), but it's disabled by default and `RSTRING_PTR()` needs to be changed to deal with this. It seems a good idea to introduce a variant of `RSTRING_PTR` which doesn't guarantee \0-termination, so such callers can then use the existing bytes always without copy. There are countless workarounds for this missing optimization, all not worth and all less readable: * https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19314 * https://github.com/ruby/net-protocol/pull/14 * Manual lazy substrings which track string + index + length * More but I don't remember all now, feel free to comment or link more urls/tickets. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:114943] [Ruby master Bug#19910] Set#delete_if behavior inconsistent with Array/Hash

Issue #19910 has been reported by segiddins (Samuel Giddins). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19910: Set#delete_if behavior inconsistent with Array/Hash https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19910 * Author: segiddins (Samuel Giddins) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * ruby -v: 3.2.2 * Backport: 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN, 3.2: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- Given the following script: ```ruby #!/usr/bin/env ruby require 'set' def enum(collection) i = 0 collection.delete_if do i += 1 raise ArgumentError if i == 6 i.odd? end rescue ArgumentError return collection end pp enum([0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]) pp enum([0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7].to_h { [_1, _1] }) pp enum([0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7].to_set) ``` It results in: ``` [1, 3, 5, 6, 7] {1=>1, 3=>3, 5=>5, 6=>6, 7=>7} #<Set: {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}> ``` As you can see, when an exception is raise inside `delete_if` on Hash/Array, the already-considered elements are still removed from the array. For `Set`, no elements are deleted (due to the implementation that builds up an intermediary list of elements to delete, then removes them from the underlying hash afterwards). It would be very helpful if `Set#delete_if` behaved consistently with other core collection types -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/
