I know it's already valid syntax, but please read on for details. When someone write a somewhat long line of code that is negated, the main way I've seen of doing it is: ``` must_create_user = !User.where(somelong: :condition, even_more: "thing").exists? ``` I personally highly dislike it, as I must keep the "not" in the back of my mind as I read the line. When quickly reading a line like this, it's super easy to misread and understand the opposite result. The current ways around this I can think of are: * rename the variable (can be annoying) * Use `unless` (only possible when in a condition; some people, like me, have a hard time grapsping a `unless`) * use a `.!`in the end (`foo.exists?.!`), I've never seen that and it looks ugly to me (this is subjective). * create a new method name with the negated meaning (not always possible) My proposal would look like this: ``` must_create_user = User.where(somelong: :condition, even_more: "thing").!exists? ``` You cannot forget the bang that you saw 15 words ago, it's right there. It also basically reads as English: "user where ... doesn't exists". The main argument against this I can think of is that it's technically already a valid syntax. I believe it's frowned upon to override the bang operator and I'm not aware of places where it is overridden to with also having a parameter. I have seen previous discussions around introducing a pipe operator, but it seems the community didn't reach a consensus. I would like to revisit this idea with a simpler approach, more of a syntactic sugar that aligns with how other languages implement the pipe operator, but without making significant changes to Ruby's syntax. Currently, we often write code like this: ```ruby value = half(square(add(value, 3))) ``` We can achieve the same result using the `then` method: ```ruby value = value.then { add(_1, 3) }.then { square(_1) }.then { half(_1) } ``` While `then` helps with readability, we can simplify it further using the proposed pipe operator: ```ruby value = add(value, 3) |> square(_1) |> half(_1) ``` Moreover, with the upcoming `it` feature in Ruby 3.4 (#18980), the code could look even cleaner: ```ruby value = add(value, 3) |> square(it) |> half(it) ``` This proposal uses the anonymous block argument `(_1)`, and with `it`, it simplifies the code without introducing complex syntax changes. It would allow us to achieve the same results as in other languages that support pipe operators, but in a way that feels natural to Ruby, using existing constructs like `then` underneath. I believe this operator would enhance code readability and maintainability, especially in cases where multiple operations are chained together. To me, using `libexec` is surprising, because according to FHS [2], the directory is for internal binaries. What is even more surprising is usage of the `bin` subdirectory there, which IMHO does not follow any standard or convention (I don't have `/usr/libexec/x86_64-linux/bin` directory on my Fedora yet). All these constants: RUBY_VERSION RUBY_RELEASE_DATE RUBY_PLATFORM RUBY_PATCHLEVEL RUBY_REVISION RUBY_COPYRIGHT RUBY_ENGINE RUBY_ENGINE_VERSION RUBY_DESCRIPTION would have made a lot of sense as `Ruby::Version` etc. `Thread::Backtrace::Location` would have made a lot of sense as `Ruby::Backtrace::Location` `RubyVM` is considered specific to CRuby; so `RubyVM::AbstractSyntaxTree` should be `Ruby::AbstractSyntaxTree` if it is meant to be present in other implementations. In #6648 there's a bit of contention over where `ruby_args` should be. `RubyVM`, `RbConfig`, `Process` have all been proposed, but `Ruby` would be an excellent choice. `Process.argv0` was added in Ruby 2.1 but the `Process` namespace is really about OS-level process control (fork, signals, euid, limits) while this argv0 is not (in `ps` it's neither value of COMMAND nor CMD) so it would have made sense as `Ruby.argv0` The "ruby" gem name is reserved, so there's no conflict. https://rubygems.org/gems/ruby All in all, "Ruby" is an appropriate namespace for many Ruby things. It does not appear that's possible to trap and rescue failed thread creation. It seems the Mac has a limit to the number of threads it supports and googling the issue suggests the limit has been known to change with hardware and OS releases. While I hit the thread creation limit due to a bug in my code and the number of threads that I was attempting to create (12,250+) is an unlikely use-case, I am hoping it would be possible to turn this into a rescuable error. While I'm reporting this on 3.3.5, I have tested the issue and the inability to rescue back to 3.3.1. (Thanks to @raels for being a great second set of eyes to make sure I wasn't doing anything goofy / wrong before making this report. This can be currently done with `str.dup.gsub!(...)` at the mere cost of 2 unnecessary extra allocations due to String#dup TBH I'm not sure we need yet another gsub method, but what gets me here is that `gsub?` is the primitive operation from which `gsub` and `gsub!` are made. Internally, these two methods work like this: ```ruby def gsub!(...) modified = gsub?(...) and replace(modified) end def gsub(...) gsub?(...) or dup end ``` We can efficiently derive these two methods from `gsub?`, but we cannot efficiently implement `gsub?` in ruby, so it feels regrettable to me that `gsub?` is not available as a built-in. Use cases include: ```ruby #ensure gsub has modified the string newstr = str.gsub?(rx,repl) or raise "str did not contain expected value" #take an action if the string is modified if str = obj.title.gsub?(rx,repl) obj.title = str obj.save end ``` -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/
