This includes: * Proc#ast * Method#ast * UnboundMethod#ast * Thread::Backtrace::Location#ast * TracePoint#ast (on call/return events) The purpose of this is to make tooling easier to write and maintain. Specifically, this would be able to be used in irb, power_assert, error_highlight, and various other tools both in core and not that make use of source code. There have been many previous discussions of retrieving node_id, source_location, source, etc. All of these use cases are covered by returning the AST for some entity. In this case node_id becomes an implementation detail, invisible to the user. Source location can be derived from the information on the AST itself. Similarly, source can be derived from the AST. Internally, I do not think we have to store any more information than we already do (since we have node_id for the first four of these, it becomes rather trivial). For TracePoint we can have a larger discussion about it, but I think it should not be too much work. In terms of implementation, the only caveat I would put is that if the ISEQ were compiled through the old parser/compiler, this should return `nil`, as the node ids do not match up and we do not want to further propagate the RubyVM::AST API. The reason I am opening up this ticket with 5 different methods requested in it is to get approval first for the direction, then I can open individual tickets or just PRs for each method. I believe this feature would ease the maintenance burden of many core libraries, and unify otherwise disparate efforts to achieve the same thing. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

After discussing with Kevin Newton and Benoit Daloze in [Feature 20999](https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/20999), I'd like to propose adding line start/stop and column start/stop information to the `#source_location` method for the following objects: - [Binding](https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/master/Binding.html) - [Proc](https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/master/Proc.html) - [Method](https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/master/Method.html) - [UnboundMethod](https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/master/UnboundMethod.html) At the moment, when using `#source_location`, you only get the following information: ``` ruby def demo = "A demonstration." # From disk. method(:demo).source_location # ["/Users/bkuhlmann/Engineering/Misc/demo", 15] # From memory. method(:demo).source_location # ["(irb)", 3] ``` Notice, when asking for the source location, we only get the path/location as the first element and the line number as the second element but I'd like to obtain a much richer set of data which includes line start/stop and column start/stop so I can avoid leaning on the `RubyVM` for this information. Example: ``` ruby def demo = "A demonstration." # From disk. instructions = RubyVM::InstructionSequence.of method(:demo) puts [instructions.absolute_path, *instructions.to_a.dig(4, :code_location)] [ "/Users/bkuhlmann/Engineering/Misc/demo", # Source path. 15, # Line start. 0, # Column start. 15, # Line stop. 29 # Column stop. ] # From memory. instructions = RubyVM::InstructionSequence.of method(:demo) puts instructions.script_lines [ "def demo = \"A demonstration.\"\n", "" ] ``` By having access to the path (or lack thereof in case of IRB), line start/stop, and column start/stop, this means we could avoid using the RubyVM to obtain raw source code for any of these objects. This would not only enhance debugging situations but also improve Domain Specific Languages that wish to leverage this information for introducing new features and/or new debugging capabilities to the language. ## How Building upon the examples provided above, I'd like to see `Binding`, `Proc`, `Method`, and `UnboundMethod` respond to `#source_location` as follows: ``` ruby [ "/Users/bkuhlmann/Engineering/Misc/demo", # Source path. 15, # Line start. 15, # Line stop. 0, # Column start. 29 # Column stop. ] ``` Notice, for data grouping purposes, I changed the array structure to always start with the path as the first element, followed by line information, and ending with column information. Alternatively, it could might be nice to improve upon the above by answering a hash each time, instead, for a more self-describing data structure. Example: ``` ruby { path: "/Users/bkuhlmann/Engineering/Misc/demo", line_start: 15, line_stop: 15, column_start: 0, column_stop: 29 } ``` For in-memory, situations like IRB, it would be nice to answer the equivalent of `RubyVM::InstructionSequence#script_lines` which would always be an `Array` with no line or column information since only the source code is necessary. Example: ``` ruby [ "def demo = \"A demonstration.\"\n", "" ] ``` From a pattern matching perspective, this could provide the best of both worlds especially if information is answered as either a `Hash` or and `Array`. The file location after using IO#ungetc may or may not change. This behavior is not documented. Since there are cases that the file position cannot be modified, I propose to unify the behavior so that the file position is not changed. ## Motivation Ensure file position behavior is independent of I/O setup. Avoid excessive exposure of implementation details. ## Current Details The file position after using IO#ungetc depends on the following conditions: When encoding conversion is not used: It changes. When encoding conversion is used: It does not change. This corresponds internally to whether the ungetc character is stored in the IO object's rbuf or cbuf. When using cbuf, the byte count of a character in cbuf may differ from its byte count in rbuf, making conversion from cbuf byte count to rbuf byte count potentially complex. Furthermore, even if one reverse-converts a character in cbuf to calculate its byte count in rbuf, the practical significance of this calculation is questionable. Therefore, it appears that adjusting the buffered byte count from the actual file position to calculate the file position in Ruby when a character exists in cbuf is not implemented. When stored in rbuf, its byte count can be used to calculate the file position, so the file position moves due to ungetc. ## Problems It seems relatively unknown that the side effects of ungetc can change depending on I/O setup. The Ruby community doesn't seem to discuss avoiding the use of file positions after ungetc. Behavior changing under little-known conditions reduces test coverage and leaves potential bugs. On Windows, files opened in "r" mode perform CRLF conversion but operate without encoding conversion, delegating conversion to the C runtime library (CRT). This is primarily for speed, but it modifies IO state in various places within io.c, reducing readability. It has also caused numerous bugs related to file position. Unfortunately, in Windows, "r" and "rt" are not equivalent depending on whether encoding conversion is used or not. This means the behavior of ungetc cannot be predicted within the context of 'text mode'. I'm working personally on switching to use encoding conversion instead of CRT read(), which means encoding conversion will be used for files opened with "r". This change will alter the behavior of ungetc. This impact occurs because implementation details are being exposed excessively, which is undesirable. ## Changes and Impact IO#ungetc will no longer change the file position. This affects not only IO#pos, but also implicitly impacts the file position when writing after ungetc. TestIO#test_copy_stream_dst_rbuf depends on this behavior. Changing the behavior of IO#ungetbyte is outside the scope of this issue. Changing it caused many tests to fail, but the details have not been investigated. Since IO#ungetbyte changes the file position while IO#ungetc does not, mixing their use is no longer possible. This means that performing ungetbyte after unetc before reading the entire data will cause an exception. /test/ruby/test_io.rb fails due to the above implicit dependency, and /spec/ruby/core/io/ungetc_spec.rb fails due to a test explicitly checking IO#pos. I have no idea about investigating the impact of real-world usage. ## Another approach Do not modify Ruby's behavior. Instead, document that the file position after using IO#ungetc cannot be trusted. Alternatively, it might be possible to issue a warning during specific operations when characters from IO#ungetc remain pending. In these cases, when Windows is switched to use encoding conversion for "r", io_unread() and rb_io_tell() will also take into account the number of bytes in cbuf in addition to rbuf to maintain compatibility. (example: require 'gtk3'=> 3 seconds+). This is a problem for people who want to make cross platform GUI apps with ruby. ## Possible Reason As touched on in [#15797](https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/15797) it seems like require uses realpath, which is emulated on windows. It checks every parent directory. The same syscalls run many times. ## Testfile C:\tmp\speedtest\testrequire.rb: ``` ruby require __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" require __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` ``` shell ruby --disable-gems C:\tmp\speedtest\testrequire.rb ``` ### Syscalls per File/Directory: 1. CreateFile 2. QueryInformationVolume 3. QueryIdInformation 4. QueryAllInformationFile 5. QueryNameInformationFile 6. QueryNameInformationFile 7. QueryNormalizedNameInformationFile 8. CloseFile ### Files/Directories checked 1. C:\tmp 2. C:\tmp\speedtest 3. C:\tmp\speedtest\helloworld1.rb 4. C:\tmp 5. C:\tmp\speedtest 6. C:\tmp\speedtest\helloworld2.rb For two required files Ruby had to do 8*6 = **48** syscalls. The syscalls orginate from rb_w32_reparse_symlink_p / lstat Rubygems live in subfolders with 9+ parts: "C:\Ruby32-x64\lib\ruby\gems\3.2.0\gems\glib2-4.0.8\lib\glib2\variant.rb" Each file takes 8 * 9 = **72**+ calls. For variant.rb it is **80** calls. The result for the syscalls don't change in such a short time, so it should be possible to cache it. With require_relative it's twice as many calls. ## Other testcases Same result: ``` ruby File.realpath __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" File.realpath __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` ``` ruby File.stat __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" File.stat __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` It does not happen in $LOAD_PATH.resolve_feature_path(__dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb") ## Request Would it be possible to cache the stat calls when using require? I tried to implement a cache inside the ruby source code, but failed. If not, is there now a way to combine ruby files into one? We already have `IO#eof?` but the problem with using `IO#eof?` is that it can block indefinitely for sockets. Therefore, code which uses `IO#eof?` to determine if there is potentially more data, may hang. ```ruby def make_request(path = "/") client = connect_remote_host # HTTP/1.0 request: client.write("GET #{path} HTTP/1.0\r\n\r\n") # Read response client.gets("\r\n") # => "HTTP/1.0 200 OK\r\n" # Assuming connection close, there are two things the server can do: # 1. peer.close # 2. peer.write(...); peer.close if client.eof? # <--- Can hang here! puts "Connection closed" # Avoid yielding as we know there definitely won't be any data. else puts "Connection open, data may be available..." # There might be data available, so yield. yield(client) end ensure client&.close end make_request do |client| puts client.read # <--- Prefer to wait here. end ``` The proposed `IO#readable?` is similar to `IO#eof?` but rather than blocking, would simply return false. The expectation is the user will subsequently call `read` which may then wait. Since local and instance variables can't end with `?`, you can't use `attr_reader` to define predicate-style methods for boolean values, like: ```ruby class Person attr_reader(:name, :age, :active?) # invalid attribute name `active?' This would be equivalent to ``` n.to_s(2).count("1") ``` However, this can be outperformed by ``` def bit_count(n) count = 0 while n > 0 n &= n - 1 # Flip the least significant 1 bit to 0 count += 1 end count end ``` I think this would be a useful addition because it would fit alongside the other bit-related methods defined on integer: `#bit_length,` `#allbits?`, `#anybits?`, `#nobits?`. Also, when working with bitmasks, a minor upgrade to performance often results in a significant improvement. The technique currently used in various fiber scheduler implementations is to use `pidfd_open`, poll for fd readiness, then call `Process::Status.wait`, which creates the instance. On recent Linux kernels (6.7 or newer), `io_uring_prep_waitid` can be used to directly wait for process termination, which provides us with the pid and status of the terminated child process, but there's no way to directly create an instance of `Process::Status`, required for implementing the `#process_wait` hook. Exposing the internal `rb_process_status_new` function would allow such an implementation. Using `io_uring_prep_waitid` would also lead to better compatibility of fiber schedulers with calls to `Process.wait(0)` or `Process.wait(-1)`, as those cannot be done using `pidfd_open`.
