I love FileUtils. Let's bring these two classes EVEN CLOSER TOGETHER by adding some tragically missing helpers. This is a regression that does not occur on macOS 15.x (Sonoma) or earlier. **Ruby version:** ruby 3.3.8 (2025-04-09 revision b200bad6cd) [arm64-darwin24] Also confirmed this affects Ruby 3.2.6 and 3.4.1. **Reproducible script:** ``` ruby require "socket" require "timeout" puts "Ruby #{RUBY_VERSION} on #{RUBY_PLATFORM}" Socket.getaddrinfo("api.segment.io", 443, nil, :STREAM) puts "Parent: DNS completed" pid = fork do puts "Child: Attempting DNS resolution..." begin Timeout.timeout(90) do Socket.getaddrinfo("api.segment.io", 443, nil, :STREAM) end puts "Child: SUCCESS" exit 0 rescue Timeout::Error puts "Child: FAILED - hung for 90 seconds" exit 1 end end Process.wait(pid) ``` **Note:** Remove the `Timeout.timeout(90)` wrapper to observe the hang indefinitely. The timeout is included only to allow the script to exit for testing purposes. **Result of reproduce process:** ``` Ruby 3.3.8 on arm64-darwin24 Parent: DNS completed Child: Attempting DNS resolution... Child: FAILED - hung for 90 seconds ``` The child process hangs with one thread consuming 100% CPU. Expected result: The child process should complete DNS resolution successfully, as it does on macOS 15.x and earlier. **Analysis:** Stack trace shows: Main thread: Blocked in `wait_getaddrinfo` → `_pthread_cond_wait` DNS thread: Spinning in `_gai_nat64_second_pass` → `nw_path_access_agent_cache` → `_os_log_preferences_refresh` → `SIGSEGV` The crash occurs in macOS's NAT64 synthesis code path. Ruby's signal handler catches the `SIGSEGV` but cannot recover, causing the DNS thread to spin. **Key observations:** - Only affects IPv4-only hosts. Hosts with IPv6 (like google.com) work correctly. - Using `AF_INET` instead of `AF_UNSPEC` works. `Socket.getaddrinfo("api.segment.io", 443, Socket::AF_INET, :STREAM)` succeeds. - Python is not affected. Python calls `getaddrinfo()` synchronously without a background thread. - Parent must do DNS before fork. Through testing in ruby/spec, I identified unexpected results in two methods: 1. `#remote_address.to_s` always returns 110 bytes, compared to `#local_address.to_s` which returns only needed bytes. Example: ```ruby # test (@addr is remote_address, @b is the socket created with UNIXServer#accept): @addr.to_s.should == @b.local_address.to_s # failure: "\x01\x00D:/a/spec/spec/rubyspec_temp/2032_3/unix.sock\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00" == "\x01\x00D:/a/spec/spec/rubyspec_temp/2032_3/unix.sock\x00" ``` Note how the address is correct, and `#unix_path`s are indeed equal, but there are NUL bytes filling the string representation up to 110 bytes. This number does not depend on the length of path name. 2. These results are obtained from GitHub runners, as I don't have a machine to test directly. (example: require 'gtk3'=> 3 seconds+). This is a problem for people who want to make cross platform GUI apps with ruby. ## Possible Reason As touched on in [#15797](https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/15797) it seems like require uses realpath, which is emulated on windows. It checks every parent directory. The same syscalls run many times. ## Testfile C:\tmp\speedtest\testrequire.rb: ``` ruby require __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" require __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` ``` shell ruby --disable-gems C:\tmp\speedtest\testrequire.rb ``` ### Syscalls per File/Directory: 1. CreateFile 2. QueryInformationVolume 3. QueryIdInformation 4. QueryAllInformationFile 5. QueryNameInformationFile 6. QueryNameInformationFile 7. QueryNormalizedNameInformationFile 8. CloseFile ### Files/Directories checked 1. C:\tmp 2. C:\tmp\speedtest 3. C:\tmp\speedtest\helloworld1.rb 4. C:\tmp 5. C:\tmp\speedtest 6. C:\tmp\speedtest\helloworld2.rb For two required files Ruby had to do 8*6 = **48** syscalls. The syscalls orginate from rb_w32_reparse_symlink_p / lstat Rubygems live in subfolders with 9+ parts: "C:\Ruby32-x64\lib\ruby\gems\3.2.0\gems\glib2-4.0.8\lib\glib2\variant.rb" Each file takes 8 * 9 = **72**+ calls. For variant.rb it is **80** calls. The result for the syscalls don't change in such a short time, so it should be possible to cache it. With require_relative it's twice as many calls. ## Other testcases Same result: ``` ruby File.realpath __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" File.realpath __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` ``` ruby File.stat __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" File.stat __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` It does not happen in $LOAD_PATH.resolve_feature_path(__dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb") ## Request Would it be possible to cache the stat calls when using require? I tried to implement a cache inside the ruby source code, but failed. If not, is there now a way to combine ruby files into one? Since inconsistencies already exist at this point, the problem appears to originate elsewhere.
