SPARC has seen little to no community usage in recent years, and its continued presence in the codebase—particularly through special cases like rb_sparc_flush_register_windows—adds complexity without clear benefit. Removing SPARC support will reduce maintenance overhead and simplify Ruby’s internals. ## Proposal We propose removing all SPARC-specific code from the Ruby source tree, including `rb_sparc_flush_register_windows` and related build system conditionals. Issue #21267 has been reported by jhawthorn (John Hawthorn). ---------------------------------------- Bug #21267: respond_to check in Class#allocate is inconsistent https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/21267 * Author: jhawthorn (John Hawthorn) * Status: Open * Backport: 3.2: UNKNOWN, 3.3: UNKNOWN, 3.4: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- `Class#allocate` has an additional `rb_obj_respond_to(klass, rb_intern("allocate"))` check to forbid allocate being called on a class where it has been made private or undefined, even if used via ex. `bind_call`. ``` >> Rational.allocate (irb):1:in '<main>': undefined method 'allocate' for class Rational (NoMethodError) >> Class.instance_method(:allocate).bind_call(Rational) (irb):1:in 'Class#allocate': calling Rational.allocate is prohibited (TypeError) ``` However I don't think this provides any additional protection from users accessing an uninitialized object, as the user can redefine allocate to anything to bypass the check: ``` >> Class.instance_method(:allocate).bind_call(Class.new(Rational) {def self.allocate; end}) => (0/1) ``` Or even override `respond_to_missing?` ``` >> Class.instance_method(:allocate).bind_call(Class.new(Rational) {def self.respond_to_missing? *; true; end}) => (0/1) ``` So I think we should remove this check. For classes that we need to forbid allocation we should use `rb_undef_alloc_func`. The classes I see this used for are: * MatchData * Refinement * Module * Complex * Rational My main motivation is that this check makes `Class#allocate` slow. There are ways we could improve that, but I don't think the check as-is is useful. If there's an alternative, more robust, check we'd like to do instead of simply removing this I'd be happy to implement it. When dealing with buffered IO, one can also expect this to flush the internal buffers if possible. Currently, all blocking IO operations release the GVL and perform the blocking system call using `rb_thread_io_blocking_region`. The current implementation takes a file descriptor and adds an entry to the VM global `waiting_fds` list. When the operation is completed, the entry is removed from `waiting_fds`. When calling `IO#close`, this list is traversed and any threads performing blocking operations with a matching file descriptor are interrupted. The performance of this is O(number of blocking IO operations) which in practice the performance of `IO#close` can take milliseconds with 10,000 threads performing blocking IO. While Ruby programs are dealing with IO instances, the VM is dealing with file descriptors, in effect performing some internal de-duplication of IO state. For reference, `IO#select` cannot be interrupted in this way. ```ruby r, w = IO.pipe thread = Thread.new do r.read(1) end Thread.pass until thread.status == "sleep" r.close thread.join # ./test.rb:6:in 'IO#read': stream closed in another thread (IOError) ``` ## Problem The fiber scheduler provides hooks for `io_read`, `io_write` and `io_wait` which are used by `IO#read`, `IO#write`, `IO#wait`, `IO#wait_readable` and `IO#wait_writable`, but those hooks are not interrupted when `IO#close` is invoked. In addition, we also change the internal `struct waiting_fd` to track the `rb_execution_context_t` rather than just the `rb_thread_t` instance, so that we can correctly wake up either the waiting thread or fiber. However, on 32bit systems like i686 and WASM, it is much more complicated. For `T_OBJECT`, `T_CLASS` and `T_MODULE`, the `shape_id` is stored as part of "user flags" in `FL_USER4-19`, and for all other types it's stored alongside the instance variable in the `generic_fields_tbl`, which means a hash lookup is required to access it. This situation makes a lot of routine noticeably more complicated, with numerous codepath taken only by 32bit systems, because to avoid doing two hash-lookup per ivar access, the code need a lot of contortions. You can look for `SHAPE_IN_BASIC_FLAGS` to have an idea of the added complexity. In addition, it forces us to duplicate some bits of information. For instance `RUBY_FL_FREEZE` is redundant with the `shape_id`. The shape already record that the object is frozen, and the only reason `RUBY_FL_FREEZE` hasn't been eliminated is because on 32bits the `shape_id` isn't store inline for some objects. Similarly, `RUBY_FL_EXIVAR` is redundant with the `shape_id`, because to know whether an object has ivars, you can simply check if `shape_id == 0`. Reclaiming these bits would be very useful for Ractors, as we'd need two bits in objects to be able to implement [lightwieght locks](https://webkit.org/blog/6161/locking-in-webkit/). Yet another complication, is that on 32bit systems, the `shape_id` is only 16bits long. I have the project to use the upper bits of the `shape_id` to store metadata, such as the `frozen` and `too_complex` status, allowing to test for this without chasing a pointer: https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/13289. But this currently can't be done on 32bit sytems, both because accessing the `shape_id` might require a hash-lookup, and also because it's only 16bits long, so every single bit used for tagging severely restrict the maximum number of shapes. ### Proposal To simplify all this, we propose that on 32bit systems, we add a `VALUE shape_id` in `RBasic`: ```c struct RBasic { VALUE flags; const VALUE klass; #if RBASIC_SHAPE_ID_FIELD VALUE shape_id; #endif } ``` This ensure that on 32bits, all objects have their `shape_id` always at the same predictable offset, and 32bits long.
