Issue #21358 has been reported by lovro-bikic (Lovro Bikić). ---------------------------------------- Feature #21358: Advanced filtering support for #dig https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/21358 * Author: lovro-bikic (Lovro Bikić) * Status: Open ---------------------------------------- Currently, `#dig` can be used to access nested data structures using "simple" keys, such as array indices or hash keys. Real-world applications sometimes require non-trivial data access, for example, finding an item in an array based on some criteria, then returning some property of that item. This feature request is to add support for such non-trivial access to `#dig`, concretely by allowing `Proc`s as dig keys. ## Introductory example Given the following data structure (similar to one from [dig docs](https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/3.4/dig_methods_rdoc.html)) ```ruby item = { id: '0001', batters: { batter: [ { id: '1001', type: 'Regular' }, { id: '1002', type: 'Chocolate' }, { id: '1003', type: 'Blueberry' }, { id: '1004', type: 'Devils Food' } ] } } ``` and the requirement "find ID of batter with type 'Chocolate'" (assuming we don't know its position in the array), currently the datum can be retrieved like so: ```ruby item.dig(:batters, :batter)&.find { it[:type] == 'Chocolate' }&.[](:id) # => "1002" ``` If `#dig` supported `Proc` as keys, the solution could be: ```ruby item.dig(:batters, :batter, -> { it[:type] == 'Chocolate' }, :id) # => "1002" ``` ## Implementation Here's a monkey patch which adds `Proc` support to `Array#dig`, to play around with: ```ruby class Array alias_method :original_dig, :dig def dig(key, *identifiers) case key when Proc val = find(&key) identifiers.any? ? val&.dig(*identifiers) : val else original_dig(key, *identifiers) end end end ``` This code also shows how I would define `Proc` argument behavior for arrays. The proc is called with each array item, and the *first* one for which a truthy value is evaluated is returned. ## Precedence I see this feature similar to [JSONPath's filter selector](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9535.html#name-filter-selector), where the [equivalent path](https://jsonpath.com/#eJx1jlFrwjAQx79KOAQnlFKnPliQjTn2LHs1PsT2rIEs0eQ… for the introductory example would be: ``` $.batters.batter[?(@.type == 'Chocolate')].id ``` I am not familiar with similar implementations in other programming languages, so I cannot draw parallels there. ## Real-world examples Here's a [GitHub code search](https://github.com/search?q=%2F(%5Cw%5C%5B%5Cw%2B%3F%5C%5D%7C%5C.(f… with potential candidates that could be refactored with this new feature. There are some false positives on this link, sorry about that. The regex is also probably incomplete, so there could be more results. This could lead to cleaner code when handling complex data structures (such as returned from JSON APIs), with fewer usages of safe navigation. On the other hand, `Proc` argument could be misinterpreted by developers to mean something else (e.g. return _all_ items for which the proc returns a truthy value). `Proc` arguments could also be seen as non-idiomatic Ruby. It should also be clearly defined how many results such `dig`s return, just the first one for which the Proc is truthy (`#find` behavior), or all for which it's truthy (`#select` behavior). I admit at this point I'm not entirely sure, though I'm leaning towards the former (`#find`). Final note: in this feature request I considered only `Array#dig`, but `Hash#dig` could be considered as well (the proc receives each key/value pair). -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

For example, `csv` had its documentation inside docs.ruby-lang.org up to Ruby 3.3: https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/3.3/CSV.html but after it has turned into a bundled gem, there is no online documentation (try searching in https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/3.4/) This is the case for all bundled gems, including major modules such as `Base64` (missing since 3.4 docs) and `Logger` (missing since master docs). Given that these libraries are still `require`able without any special installation, it would be nice to have their documentation on docs.ruby-lang.org (or somewhere online reachable from Google). -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

I'm running in the same environment each time and bundled gems are installed fine with 3.3 or with the mentioned commit reverted. I bisected this from a version that did install the gems to 007c75ce4c66243e41144c6977e5ccbf4ab71c93 . The comment in that commit does indicate that it's mean to skip games if the gems are not found or can't be built but the final message is 'not found in bundled_gems'. I'm unsure if this is this is working as intended. When my build finishes I see the following line in the log: ``` installing bundled gem cache: /home/user/ruby/build/.rubies/bisect/lib/ruby/gems/3.4.0+0/cache skipped bundled gems: bigdecimal-3.1.8.gem not found in bundled_gems debug-1.9.2.gem not found in bundled_gems nkf-0.2.0.gem not found in bundled_gems/rac racc-1.8.1.gem not found in bundled_gems rbs-3.6.1.gem not found in bundled_gems syslog-0.1.2.gem not found in bundled_gems typeprof-0.30.0.gem not found in bundled_gems ``` I see racc in bundled gems and cached in downloads. I don't see any files named gem.build_complete or errors concerning gem building or missing C extensions in my build logs. Is there additional configure flags or dependencies I need to include the bundled gems in the upcoming 3.4.0 ruby release? My specific use case is the Ruby files that are templated in Prism, but I also believe it would be beneficial for ERB. The functionality I'm looking for effectively mirrors the `#line` macro in C. The goal would be for this to be entirely statically analyzable, so whatever syntax ends up being used would have to be required to be constant. A couple of options for this would be: * An entirely new syntax construct (`__SOURCE__ 5 "foo.erb"`) * Re-using existing syntax constructs (`__LINE__ = 5; __FILE__ = "foo.erb"`) * A magic comment (`# -*- source-line: 5; source-file: foo.erb -*-` or `# source: 5 foo.erb`) I don't particularly care which one is selected, it's just the end-result that I'm looking for that we can mark the source line and file within the generated code. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/
