Because this function is synchronous, we cannot interrupt the thread performing name resolution until the DNS server returns a response. We can see this behavior by setting blackhole.webpagetest.org (72.66.115.13) as a DNS server, which swallows all packets, and resolving any name: ``` # cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 72.66.115.13 # ./local/bin/ruby -rsocket -e 'Addrinfo.getaddrinfo("www.ruby-lang.org", 80)' ^C^C^C^C ``` As we see, Ctrl+C does not stop ruby. The current workaround that users can take is to do name resolution in a Ruby thread. ```ruby Thread.new { Addrinfo.getaddrinfo("www.ruby-lang.org", 80) }.value ``` The thread that calls this code is interruptible. (Note that the newly created thread itself will be stuck until the DNS lookup exceeds the time out.) ## Proposal We can solve this problem by using c-ares, which is an asynchronous name resolver, as a backend of `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo`, etc. (@sorah told me about this library, thanks!) https://c-ares.org/ I have created a PoC patch. https://github.com/mame/ruby/commit/547806146993bbc25984011d423dcc0f913b211c By applying this patch, we can interrupt `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo` by Ctrl+C. ``` # cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 72.66.115.13 # ./local/bin/ruby -rsocket -e 'Addrinfo.getaddrinfo("www.ruby-lang.org", 80)' ^C-e:1:in `getaddrinfo': Interrupt from -e:1:in `<main>' ``` ## Discussion ### About c-ares According to the site of c-ares, some major tools including libcurl, Wireshark, and Apache Arrow are already using c-ares. In the language interpreter, node.js seems to be using c-ares. I am honestly not sure about the compatibility of c-ares with `getaddrinfo(3)`. I guess there is no major incompatibility because I have not experienced any name resolution problem of curl. @akr (who is the author and maintainer of Ruby's socket library) suggested to check if OS-specific name resolution, e.g., WINS on Windows, NIS on Solaris, etc., is supported. He also said that it may be acceptable even if they are not supported. Whether to bundle c-ares source code with ruby would require further discussion. If this proposal is accepted, then c-ares will become a de facto essential dependency for practical use, like gmp, in my opinion. Incidentally, node.js bundles c-ares: https://github.com/nodejs/node/tree/main/deps/cares ### Alternative approaches Recent glibc provides `getaddrinfo_a(3)` which performs asynchronous name resolution. However, this function has a fatal problem of being incompatible with `fork(2)`, which is heavily used in the Ruby ecosystem. In fact, the attempt to use `getaddrinfo_a(3)` (#17134) has been revert because it fails rails tests. (#17220) Another alternative is to have a worker pthread inside Ruby that calls getaddrinfo(3). Instead of calling getaddrinfo(3) directly, `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo` would ask the worker to resolve a name and wait for a response. This method should be able to implement cancellation. (Simply put, this means reimplementation of getaddrinfo_a(3) on our own, taking into account of `fork(2).) This has the advantages: not adding dependencies on external libraries and not having compatibility issues with `getaddrinfo(3)`. However, it is considerably more difficult to implement and maintain. An internal pthread may have a non-trivial impact on the execution efficiency and memory usage. Also, we may need to implement a mechanism to dynamically change the number of workers depending on the load. It would be ideal if we could try and evaluate both approaches. But my current impression is that using c-ares is the quickest and best compromise. ## Contribution wanted I have made it up to the PoC, but don't have much time to complete this. @naruse suggested me to create a ticket asking for contributions. Is anyone interested in this? * This patch changes `rsock_getaddrinfo` to accept a timeout argument. There are several places where Qnil is passed as a timeout (where I add `// TODO` in the PoC). We need to consider what timeout we should pass. * This cares only `getaddrinfo`, but we also need to care `getnameinfo` (and something else if any). There may be some issues I'm not aware of. * I have not yet tested this PoC seriously. It would be great if we could evaluate it with some real apps. I dug into how the modifier works in CRuby and the history of it here: https://jpcamara.com/2025/08/02/the-o-in-ruby-regex.html. The feature seems like a total footgun with almost no upside. With -flto=auto it goes away, with -O0 or -O3 too. I use gcc (GCC) 14.2.1 20250405 on Void Linux with glibc 2.41. On 64-bit x86_64 it works fine with same versions. I have bisected the issue to https://github.com/ruby/ruby/commit/14d154076876 but I don't see how this can introduce the bug. I assume it's some undefined behavior that is potentially triggered. (However reverting that patch works...) I think the behavior is related to the embedded string being expanded into a proper string, but my internal-fu isn't good enough. However when I use the extension to write a bitmap to disk the bitmap is corrupted. This is because the library uses std::ofstream which eventually uses the C API fclose to write the final bytes to the bitmap file and then closes it. The problem is that Ruby overrides `fclose` and replaces it with `rb_w32_fclose`. It then *exports* its custom version from from x64-vcruntime140-ruby340.dll. And the exported version is broken (at least from the standpoint of the C standard library). Note this has been a long standing issue. The first report I see is from 2013: https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/8569 More recently in 2020 (which explains the issue very well): https://github.com/NREL/OpenStudio/issues/3942#issuecomment-610673401 I understand that Ruby is trying to provide a platform independent API. But the problem is this solution breaks any third party libraries that rely on these C APIs (which of course are very common). And there is no good workaround (see https://github.com/NREL/OpenStudio/issues/3942#issuecomment-611072774) So would it be possible for Ruby to stop exporting custom versions of basic C APIs? The code that does it is here: https://github.com/ruby/ruby/blob/master/win32/mkexports.rb#L41 Ruby of course could still use its custom versions of fclose, read, write etc within ruby.exe and x64-vcruntime140-ruby340.dll. But they should not be exported from x64-vcruntime140-ruby340.dll and thus be off limits to extensions. If a case comes up where an extension really needs access to rb_w32_fclose instead of fclose then an extension developer can use an `#ifdef _WIN32` to do so and work across platforms. That at least puts the developer in control versus now where I don't see any way I can to wrap the bitmap library for usage in Ruby. From my experience the biggest problem is the replacing of fclose with rb_w32_fclose. [1] Some of the projects detected the method first in `extconf.rb`, but a majority just referenced it. `ffi` used to have the detection code but dropped it since the method was in all supported ruby versions. It feels like this method is now part of the undocumented public interface. My suggestion is to add the method to the real public interface in `ruby/thread.h`. Those namespaces can require/load libraries (either .rb or native extension) separately from other namespaces. Dependencies of required/loaded libraries are also required/loaded in the namespace. This feature will be disabled by default at first, and will be enabled by an env variable `RUBY_NAMESPACE=1` as an experimental feature. (It could be enabled by default in the future possibly.) ### "on read" approach The "on write" approach here is the design to define namespaces on the loaded side. For example, Java packages are defined in the .java files and it is required to separate namespaces from each other. It can be implemented very easily, but it requires all libraries to be updated with the package declaration. (In my opinion, it's almost impossible in the Ruby ecosystem.) The "on read" approach is to create namespaces and then require/load applications and libraries in them. Programmers can control namespace separation at the "read" time. So, we can introduce the namespace separation incrementally. ## Motivation The "namespace on read" can solve the 2 problems below, and can make a path to solve another problem: * Avoiding name conflicts between libraries * Applications can require two different libraries safely which use the same module name. * Avoiding unexpected globally shared modules/objects * Applications can make an independent/unshared module instance. * Multiple versions of gems can be required * Application developers will have fewer version conflicts between gem dependencies if rubygems/bundler will support the namespace on read. "Root" namespace exists solely in a Ruby process, and "user" namespaces can be created as many as Ruby programmers want. ### Root namespace Root namespace is a unique namespace to be defined when a Ruby process starts. It only contains built-in classes/modules/constants, which are available without any `require` calls, including RubyGems itself (when `--disable-gems` is not specified). ### User namespace User namespace is a namespace to run users' Ruby scripts. The "main" namespace is the namespace to run the user's `.rb` script specified by the `ruby` command-line argument. Other user namespaces ("optional" namespaces) can be created by `Namespace.new` call. In user namespace (both main and optional namespaces), built-in class/module definitions are copied from the root namespace, and other new classes/modules are defined in the namespace, separately from other (root/user) namespaces. The newly defined classes/modules are top-level classes/modules in the main namespace like `App`, but in optional namespaces, classes/modules are defined under the namespace (subclass of Module), like `ns::App`. In that namespace `ns`, `ns::App` is accessible as `App` (or `::App`). There is no way to access `App` in the main namespace from the code in the different namespace `ns`. ### Constants, class variables and global variables Constants, Class variables of built-in classes and global variables are also separated by namespace. Values set to class/global variables in a namespace are invisible in other namespaces. ### Methods and procs Methods defined in a namespace run with the defined namespace, even when called from other namespaces. Procs created in a namespace run with the defined namespace too. ### Dynamic link libraries Dynamic link libraries (typically .so files) are also loaded in namespaces as well as .rb files. ### Open class (Changes on built-in classes) In user namespaces, built-in class definitions can be modified. But those operations are processed as copy-on-write of class definition from the root namespace, and the changed definitions are visible only in the (user) namespace. Definitions in the root namespace are not modifiable from other namespaces. Methods defined in the root namespace run only with root-namespace definitions. ## Enabling Namespace Specify `RUBY_NAMESPACE=1` environment variable when starting Ruby processes. `1` is the only valid value here. Namespace feature can be enabled only when Ruby processes start.
