These interfaces are declared in `internal/` headers and are not intended to be stable APIs for third-party extensions. ## Background Some bundled extensions currently include private implementation headers to access a small part of CRuby internals. For example, `ext/coverage` needs to enumerate method coverage data. Doing that directly requires knowledge of method entries, IMEMOs, the object space, and VM-private structures. Consequently, the extension depends on `internal/gc.h` and `vm_core.h`. Likewise, `ext/objspace` accesses fields of call-info and call-cache IMEMOs directly. These dependencies expose the extensions to much more of the VM implementation than they actually need. They also cause extensions to depend transitively on thread implementation files through `vm_core.h`. ## Proposal Add narrow internal interfaces for the bundled extensions: * Collect coverage constants and declarations in `internal/coverage.h`. * Perform method-entry traversal in the core and pass normalized method coverage data to `ext/coverage` through `rb_coverage_each_method`. * Add `rb_imemo_callinfo_mid` and `rb_imemo_callcache_get_data` for the information required by `ext/objspace`. * Keep these declarations in `internal/` headers rather than public `ruby/` headers. * Remove the transitive inclusion of `vm_core.h` from `internal/gc.h`. The new interfaces must be exported because the bundled extensions can be built as shared libraries. They are internal implementation interfaces, not supported extension APIs. With these interfaces, extensions under `ext` no longer depend on `vm_core.h` or `thread_pthread.[ch]`. ## Compatibility There is no intended Ruby-level behavior change. In my case, deep `.glob` is broken for all the parent folders of that deep long-path folder (( The only way I found for listing is ``` ruby require 'win32ole' fso = WIN32OLE.new 'Scripting.FileSystemObject' for file in fso.GetFolder(300_chars_path).files file.name file.path.length end ``` But using this workaround breaks all my code workflow built on top of Pathname and FileUtils ((. So for me, it looks like some operations with long-path folders are not working just because in Ruby there is a check for the path length and not a real operation problem. And in some places (see .mkpath) there is no such check and all works fine. Also notice that other applications on Windows have no problems with long-path folders (like Total Commander). Go's runtime sets the undocumented `IsLongPathAwareProcess` bit (0x80 at PEB offset 3) at startup, which `RtlAreLongPathsEnabled` reads, so long paths work per-process regardless of `LongPathsEnabled` ([os_windows.go](https://go.dev/src/runtime/os_windows.go), Windows 10.0.15063+). I tried it on my machine with `LongPathsEnabled=0` and 260+ character paths worked for `File`, `Dir`, `Dir.glob`, `require`, and even `Dir.chdir`, which `\\?\` cannot handle. This is a problem for people who want to make cross platform GUI apps with ruby. ## Possible Reason As touched on in [#15797](https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/15797) it seems like require uses realpath, which is emulated on windows. It checks every parent directory. The syscalls orginate from rb_w32_reparse_symlink_p / lstat Rubygems live in subfolders with 9+ parts: "C:\Ruby32-x64\lib\ruby\gems\3.2.0\gems\glib2-4.0.8\lib\glib2\variant.rb" Each file takes 8 * 9 = **72**+ calls. For variant.rb it is **80** calls. The result for the syscalls don't change in such a short time, so it should be possible to cache it. With require_relative it's twice as many calls. ## Other testcases Same result: ``` ruby File.realpath __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" File.realpath __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` ``` ruby File.stat __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" File.stat __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` It does not happen in $LOAD_PATH.resolve_feature_path(__dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb") ## Request Would it be possible to cache the stat calls when using require? The process becomes unresponsive and requires kill -9 to terminate. Environment: - Ruby: 4.0.1 (Homebrew, ARM64) - Platform: macOS 15.6.1 (Darwin 24.6.0, Apple Silicon) - Rails: 8.x with Puma 7.2.0 - Mode: Development with code reloading enabled Steps to reproduce: 1. Run a Rails application with Puma in development mode (bundle exec rails server -e development -b 0.0.0.0) 2. Make a several code change to trigger hot reload, reload the site in the browser in between 3. Process freezes with ~100% CPU Expected behavior: Code reloads successfully, GC completes normally. Actual behavior: Process freezes indefinitely at 100% CPU. This is triggered by code reloading which invalidates method caches. The amount of mail I get as a Ruby committer is already significant, but lately, it has been getting worse. Copilot is producing additional mails. And most of them are useless: 1) There are the regurgitating mails. See the comment from Earlopain below for why we don't need these. 2) There are the mails that say it has no comment. No actual committer sends such mails. 3) There are the mails that say that it "was unable to review this pull request because the user who requested the review has reached their quota limit.". No actual committer sends out mails e.g. saying they are currently busy with their day job. Can we change the settings so that such emails are not sent anymore? Maybe just switch off Copilot, and have people who think it might produce useful comments activate it manually for specific commits? I don't really care too much about the specifics; any improvement to this situation is welcome.
