[ruby-core:112045] [Ruby master Bug#19378] Windows: Use less syscalls for faster require of big gems
by aidog (Andi Idogawa) 27 Jul '26

27 Jul '26

Issue #19378 has been reported by aidog (Andi Idogawa). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19378: Windows: Use less syscalls for faster require of big gems https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19378 * Author: aidog (Andi Idogawa) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * ruby -v: 3.2.0 * Backport: 2.7: UNKNOWN, 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN, 3.2: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- Hello 🙂 ## Problem require is slow on windows for big gems. (example: require 'gtk3'=> 3 seconds+). This is a problem for people who want to make cross platform GUI apps with ruby. ## Possible Reason As touched on in [#15797](https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/15797) it seems like require uses realpath, which is emulated on windows. It checks every parent directory. The same syscalls run many times. ## Testfile C:\tmp\speedtest\testrequire.rb: ``` ruby require __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" require __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` ``` shell ruby --disable-gems C:\tmp\speedtest\testrequire.rb ``` ### Syscalls per File/Directory: 1. CreateFile 2. QueryInformationVolume 3. QueryIdInformation 4. QueryAllInformationFile 5. QueryNameInformationFile 6. QueryNameInformationFile 7. QueryNormalizedNameInformationFile 8. CloseFile ### Files/Directories checked 1. C:\tmp 2. C:\tmp\speedtest 3. C:\tmp\speedtest\helloworld1.rb 4. C:\tmp 5. C:\tmp\speedtest 6. C:\tmp\speedtest\helloworld2.rb For two required files Ruby had to do 8*6 = **48** syscalls. The syscalls orginate from rb_w32_reparse_symlink_p / lstat Rubygems live in subfolders with 9+ parts: "C:\Ruby32-x64\lib\ruby\gems\3.2.0\gems\glib2-4.0.8\lib\glib2\variant.rb" Each file takes 8 * 9 = **72**+ calls. For variant.rb it is **80** calls. The result for the syscalls don't change in such a short time, so it should be possible to cache it. With require_relative it's twice as many calls. ## Other testcases Same result: ``` ruby File.realpath __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" File.realpath __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` ``` ruby File.stat __dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb" File.stat __dir__ + "/helloworld2.rb" ``` It does not happen in $LOAD_PATH.resolve_feature_path(__dir__ + "/helloworld1.rb") ## Request Would it be possible to cache the stat calls when using require? I tried to implement a cache inside the ruby source code, but failed. If not, is there now a way to combine ruby files into one? I previously talked about require here: [YJIT: Windows support lacking.](https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19325#note-11) ## How to reproduce Ruby versions: At least 3.0+, most likely older ones too. Tested using Ruby Installer 3.1 and 3.2. [Procmon Software by Sysinternals](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/proc… -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:113743] [Ruby master Feature#19708] Support `attr_reader :foo?`
by AMomchilov (Alexander Momchilov) 13 Jul '26

13 Jul '26

Issue #19708 has been reported by AMomchilov (Alexander Momchilov). ---------------------------------------- Feature #19708: Support `attr_reader :foo?` https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19708 * Author: AMomchilov (Alexander Momchilov) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal ---------------------------------------- Creating reader methods with `attr_reader` is preferable over defining them by hand, not only because it's more convenient, but also because it hits a fast path in MRI (see `VM_METHOD_TYPE_IVAR`). Since local and instance variables can't end with `?`, you can't use `attr_reader` to define predicate-style methods for boolean values, like: ```ruby class Person attr_reader(:name, :age, :active?) # invalid attribute name `active?' (NameError) def initialize @name = "Bob" @age = 30 @active = true end end ``` It would be nice if `attr_reader` (and friends) could behave like: ```ruby def active? = @active ``` (`attr_writer` and `attr_accessor` couldn't do the same, since `def active?=(new_value)` isn't valid, so they'd probably stick with `def active=(new_value)`) -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:115165] [Ruby master Bug#19972] Install default/bundled gems into dedicated directories
by vo.x (Vit Ondruch) 16 Jun '26

16 Jun '26

Issue #19972 has been reported by vo.x (Vit Ondruch). ---------------------------------------- Bug #19972: Install default/bundled gems into dedicated directories https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19972 * Author: vo.x (Vit Ondruch) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal * ruby -v: ruby 3.3.0dev (2023-10-24 master c44d65427e) [x86_64-linux] * Backport: 3.0: UNKNOWN, 3.1: UNKNOWN, 3.2: UNKNOWN ---------------------------------------- I think that the current situation, where the same directory (lets call it `Gem.default_dir`) is used for default/bundled gems as well as for user installed gems, is suboptimal. During the times, this has caused us quite some issue on Fedora. Historically, we redefined the `Gem.default_dir` to user home directory, to avoid the mixing of system gems and user installed gems. Unfortunately, with advent of default/bundled gems, we were facing issues that these gems were suddenly not listed, etc. I am realizing this issue in full once again since the "user install" RubyGems feature has landed [1]. I also think that we have arrived to this situation by evolution, not by design. Therefore my proposal is: Keep the `Gem.default_dir` for user `gem install`ed gems and lets install default and bundled gems into separate dedicated directories. Have separate `Gem.bundled_gems_dir` and `Gem.default_gems_dir` structures. Of course, if `Gem.default_dir == Gem.bundled_gems_dir == Gem.default_gems_dir`, we still can have the current layout. I have a simple POC here: https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/8761 BTW I have reported it here, because I think that RubyGems provides all it is needed. So it is not RubyGems ticket after all. However, I believe that RubyGems could benefit from this long term and some simplifications/cleanups would be possible. [ruby-core:113430] [Ruby master Feature#19633] Allow passing block to `Kernel#autoload` as alternative to second `filename` argument
by shioyama (Chris Salzberg) 10 Jun '26

10 Jun '26

Issue #19633 has been reported by shioyama (Chris Salzberg). ---------------------------------------- Feature #19633: Allow passing block to `Kernel#autoload` as alternative to second `filename` argument https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19633 * Author: shioyama (Chris Salzberg) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal ---------------------------------------- `Kernel#autoload` takes two arguments, a symbol `module` representing the constant to be autoloaded, and a `filepath` to load the constant from (with `require`). Currently, Zeitwerk has to [monkeypatch `Kernel#require`](https://github.com/fxn/zeitwerk/blob/a7c4a983df0f4e4058f32c610dac1e8b99f687da/lib/zeitwerk/kernel.rb) to fetch the loader for the file being loaded, then run the original (aliased) `require`, then run autoload callbacks. In addition to the monkeypatch, this also requires a registry (`Zeitwerk::Registry`) to map file paths to loaders, to know which loader should be used for a given autoload-triggered `require`. In fact, Zeitwerk has to _assume_ that the monkey-patched `require` call came from an autoload trigger; there is no way to really be sure of the source. If Ruby allowed passing a block as an alternative to the explicit filepath, then I think this could be improved and would eliminate the need for a monkeypatch. So something like this: ```ruby autoload(:B) do require "lib/b" # trigger callback, etc end ``` I am implementing a gem called [Im](https://github.com/shioyama/im) which is a fork of Zeitwerk, and in the case of this gem, such a feature would be even more useful. Im implements autoloads on anonymous modules by registering an autoload and then "catching" the require and converting it into a `load`, passing the module as the second argument (see [here](https://github.com/shioyama/im/blob/44ce348639a1aae563a5be7a40602761e….) This is currently quite tricky because, again, it's hard to know _where_ a `require` came from. In addition to removing the monkeypatch (inherited from Zeitwerk), Im would further benefit from the block argument because then it could simply access the module via a closure, rather than pulling it from a registry: ```ruby mod.autoload(:Foo) do load "lib/foo.rb", mod end ``` I don't know how hard or easy this would be to implement, but if there is interest in this as a feature I'd be happy to look into implementing it. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:115196] [Ruby master Feature#19979] Allow methods to declare that they don't accept a block via `&nil`
by ufuk (Ufuk Kayserilioglu) 15 Feb '26

15 Feb '26

Issue #19979 has been reported by ufuk (Ufuk Kayserilioglu). ---------------------------------------- Feature #19979: Allow methods to declare that they don't accept a block via `&nil` https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19979 * Author: ufuk (Ufuk Kayserilioglu) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal ---------------------------------------- ## Abstract This feature proposes new syntax to allow methods to explicitly declare that they don't accept blocks, and makes passing of a block to such methods an error. ## Background In #15554, it was proposed to automatically detect methods that do not use the block passed to them, and to error if a block was passed to such methods. As far as I can tell, it was later on closed since #10499 solved a large part of the problem. That proposal has, as part of the dev meeting discussion, a proposal from @matz to allow methods to use `&nil` to explicitly declare that they don't accept a block. At the time, the proposal was trying to solve a bigger problem, so this sub-proposal was never considered seriously. However, notes in the proposal say: > It is explicit, but it is tough to add this `&nil` parameter declaration to all of methods (do you want to add it to `def []=(i, e, &nil)`?). (I agree `&nil` is valuable on some situations) This proposal extracts that sub-proposal to make this a new language feature. ## Proposal In Ruby, it is always valid for the caller to pass a block to a method call, even if the callee is not expecting a block to be passed. This leads to subtle user errors, where the author of some code assumes a method call uses a block, but the block passed to the method call is silently ignored. The proposal is to introduce `&nil` at method declaration sites to mean "This method does not accept a block". This is symmetric to the ability to pass `&nil` at call sites to mean "I am not passing a block to this method call", which is sometimes useful when making `super` calls (since blocks are always implicitly passed). Explicitly, the proposal is to make the following behaviour be a part of Ruby: ```ruby def find(item = nil, &nil) # some implementation that doesn't call `yield` or `block_given?` end find { |i| i == 42 } # => ArgumentError: passing block to the method `find' that does not accept a block. ``` ## Implementation I assume the implementation would be a grammar change to make `&nil` valid at method declaration sites, as well as raising an `ArgumentError` for methods that are called with a block but are declared with `&nil`. ## Evaluation Since I don't have an implementation, I can't make a proper evaluation of the feature proposal. However, I would expect the language changes to be minimal with no runtime costs for methods that don't use the `&nil` syntax. ## Discussion This proposal has much smaller scope than #15554 so that the Ruby language can start giving library authors the ability to explicitly mark their methods as not accepting a block. This is fully backward compatible, since it is an opt-in behaviour and not an opt-out one. Future directions after this feature proposal could be a way to signal to the VM that any method in a file that doesn't explicitly use `yield`/`block_given?` or explicitly declared a block parameter should be treated as not accepting a block. This can be done via some kind of pragma similar to `frozen_string_literal`, or through other means. However, such future directions are beyond the scope of this proposal. ## Summary Adding the ability for methods to declare that they don't accept a block will make writing code against such methods safer and more resilient, and will prevent silently ignored behaviour that is often hard to catch or troubleshoot. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:112326] [Ruby master Feature#19430] Contribution wanted: DNS lookup by c-ares library
by mame (Yusuke Endoh) 05 Dec '25

05 Dec '25

Issue #19430 has been reported by mame (Yusuke Endoh). ---------------------------------------- Feature #19430: Contribution wanted: DNS lookup by c-ares library https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19430 * Author: mame (Yusuke Endoh) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal ---------------------------------------- ## Problem At the present time, Ruby uses `getaddrinfo(3)` to resolve names. Because this function is synchronous, we cannot interrupt the thread performing name resolution until the DNS server returns a response. We can see this behavior by setting blackhole.webpagetest.org (72.66.115.13) as a DNS server, which swallows all packets, and resolving any name: ``` # cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 72.66.115.13 # ./local/bin/ruby -rsocket -e 'Addrinfo.getaddrinfo("www.ruby-lang.org", 80)' ^C^C^C^C ``` As we see, Ctrl+C does not stop ruby. The current workaround that users can take is to do name resolution in a Ruby thread. ```ruby Thread.new { Addrinfo.getaddrinfo("www.ruby-lang.org", 80) }.value ``` The thread that calls this code is interruptible. (Note that the newly created thread itself will be stuck until the DNS lookup exceeds the time out.) ## Proposal We can solve this problem by using c-ares, which is an asynchronous name resolver, as a backend of `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo`, etc. (@sorah told me about this library, thanks!) https://c-ares.org/ I have created a PoC patch. https://github.com/mame/ruby/commit/547806146993bbc25984011d423dcc0f913b211c By applying this patch, we can interrupt `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo` by Ctrl+C. ``` # cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 72.66.115.13 # ./local/bin/ruby -rsocket -e 'Addrinfo.getaddrinfo("www.ruby-lang.org", 80)' ^C-e:1:in `getaddrinfo': Interrupt from -e:1:in `<main>' ``` ## Discussion ### About c-ares According to the site of c-ares, some major tools including libcurl, Wireshark, and Apache Arrow are already using c-ares. In the language interpreter, node.js seems to be using c-ares. I am honestly not sure about the compatibility of c-ares with `getaddrinfo(3)`. I guess there is no major incompatibility because I have not experienced any name resolution problem of curl. @akr (who is the author and maintainer of Ruby's socket library) suggested to check if OS-specific name resolution, e.g., WINS on Windows, NIS on Solaris, etc., is supported. He also said that it may be acceptable even if they are not supported. Whether to bundle c-ares source code with ruby would require further discussion. If this proposal is accepted, then c-ares will become a de facto essential dependency for practical use, like gmp, in my opinion. Incidentally, node.js bundles c-ares: https://github.com/nodejs/node/tree/main/deps/cares ### Alternative approaches Recent glibc provides `getaddrinfo_a(3)` which performs asynchronous name resolution. However, this function has a fatal problem of being incompatible with `fork(2)`, which is heavily used in the Ruby ecosystem. In fact, the attempt to use `getaddrinfo_a(3)` (#17134) has been revert because it fails rails tests. (#17220) Another alternative is to have a worker pthread inside Ruby that calls getaddrinfo(3). Instead of calling getaddrinfo(3) directly, `Addrinfo.getaddrinfo` would ask the worker to resolve a name and wait for a response. This method should be able to implement cancellation. (Simply put, this means reimplementation of getaddrinfo_a(3) on our own, taking into account of `fork(2).) This has the advantages: not adding dependencies on external libraries and not having compatibility issues with `getaddrinfo(3)`. However, it is considerably more difficult to implement and maintain. An internal pthread may have a non-trivial impact on the execution efficiency and memory usage. Also, we may need to implement a mechanism to dynamically change the number of workers depending on the load. It would be ideal if we could try and evaluate both approaches. But my current impression is that using c-ares is the quickest and best compromise. ## Contribution wanted I have made it up to the PoC, but don't have much time to complete this. @naruse suggested me to create a ticket asking for contributions. Is anyone interested in this? * This patch changes `rsock_getaddrinfo` to accept a timeout argument. There are several places where Qnil is passed as a timeout (where I add `// TODO` in the PoC). We need to consider what timeout we should pass. * This cares only `getaddrinfo`, but we also need to care `getnameinfo` (and something else if any). There may be some issues I'm not aware of. * I have not yet tested this PoC seriously. It would be great if we could evaluate it with some real apps. Also, it would be great to hear from someone who knows more about c-ares. -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

[ruby-core:111742] [Ruby master Feature#19326] Please add a better API for passing a Proc to a Ractor
by sdwolfz 18 Oct '25

18 Oct '25

Issue #19326 has been reported by sdwolfz (Codruț Gușoi). ---------------------------------------- Feature #19326: Please add a better API for passing a Proc to a Ractor https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/19326 * Author: sdwolfz (Codruț Gușoi) * Status: Open * Priority: Normal ---------------------------------------- Example 1: ```ruby class Worker def initialize(&block) @block = block end def run Ractor.new(@block, &:call) end end worker = Worker.new { 1 } puts worker.run.take ``` Errors with: ``` <internal:ractor>:271:in `new': allocator undefined for Proc (TypeError) from scripts/run.rb:9:in `run' from scripts/run.rb:14:in `<main>' ``` Example 2: ```ruby class Worker def initialize(&block) @block = Ractor.make_shareable(block) end def run Ractor.new(@block, &:call) end end worker = Worker.new { 1 } puts worker.run.take ``` Errors with: ``` <internal:ractor>:820:in `make_shareable': Proc's self is not shareable: #<Proc:0x00007f00394c38b8 scripts/run.rb:13> (Ractor::IsolationError) from scripts/run.rb:5:in `initialize' from scripts/run.rb:13:in `new' from scripts/run.rb:13:in `<main>' ``` Example 3: ```ruby class Worker def initialize(&block) @block = Ractor.make_shareable(block) end def run Ractor.new(@block, &:call) end end worker = Ractor.current.instance_eval { Worker.new { 1 } } puts worker.run.take ``` Works, but having `Ractor.current.instance_eval` as a wrapper around the block is not ideal, as Ractor is supposed to be only an implementation detail in Worker. I know about https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/18243 and the discussion around `proc.bind(nil)`. That would actually be ideal, as for the purposes if why I want this functionality I don't care what `self` is in a block, and the less it has access to the better. The general idea is to have a Ractor be able to lazily execute an arbitrary proc. And all the bindings it would need would be passed explicitly, either through `args` in the constructor or through `send`/`receive`, so `self` would really not matter. The benefit: this would make it so concurrent code can be more easily be implemented with Ractors as currently you can execute an arbitrary proc by passing it to a Thread (but you don't get the nice data isolation). -- https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/
